Wireless and Satellite Internet Access
One of the hottest wireless technologies out today has to be the 802.11b/g/n Wi-fi implementations. This protocol is allowing users to access network services including the Internet and corporate networks through wireless access at home, work, and in thousands of "hot spots" around the world. It is by fat the fastest growing technology for wireless Internet access. Its home/small office implementation is usually in the form of a wireless router/switch that allows you to connect multiple computers and share services including internet access without the need for wires.
Wireless/cellular emerged as the dominant communications technology of the 1990s and continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the telecommunications industry. Not that long ago, Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) were all the rage. Today their numbers are much lower as many startups continue to dismay in the current competitive environment. A handful of fixed wireless providers and some high-speed mobile WISPs continue to build out their networks with the thought that if you build it, they'll come. And many of these WISPs provide very compelling reasons for businesses and individuals to go with this service. Since this is a 'line of sight' service served through cell sights, each provider usually sticks with a certain geographical area. So you there are not that many trans/national providers of this service.
Then there is wireless as in mobile data communications. CDMA, GSM, CDMA-2000, GPRS and the many connotations of 3G standards provide data communication facilities for mobile users. Some of course do it better (2.5 and 3rd generation) than others (2nd generation and earlier). By all means this is a growing market but most users haven't found the services compelling enough to make the carrier's infrastructure investments worthwhile.
